      CandySoul's Bio

      CandySoul

Music has never sounded so SWEET as the sultry Hip-Hop Soul sounds of CandySoul. Not only is she a vocalist with perfect pitch, she excels as a comedic actress, songwriter, and music producer. CandySoul has been making a name for herself in the realm of entertainment for over 10 years.

This natural born entertainer grew up in North Little Rock, Arkansas and pursued her dreams in musical cities such as Memphis and Atlanta. At the young age of 5 years old, playing the piano by ear, this super talent wrote and composed her 1st song entitled "Fun in the Sun".  Throughout her school years, she advanced by participating in musicals, piano recitals, and choirs.  During her high school years, her music teacher discovered that she had "Perfect Pitch" and her mentors encouraged her to seriously pursue a career in music.  So in college she sharpened her skills by studying music business, music technology, acting, and vocal performance. She performed in several vocal ensembles; one of which led her to tour China and perform with the Chinese orchestra.  After graduating with a degree in Music and Vocal Production, her journey to musical success has blessed her to achieve HOLLYWOOD success on the hit show American Idol,  co-star in MTV's mini series: "5 Dollar Cover", background for Kim Burrell and K.Michelle, tour with R. Kelly, and sing on BET's Monique Show and The Steve Harvey Morning Show, just to name a few.

In addition to her many accolades, CandySoul has won several talent contests, wrote and composed theme songs for local stage plays and television shows, and has many years of teaching experience in vocal performance. Randy of American Idol says "She can DEFINITELY sing", VH1's Love & Hip Hop star, K.Michelle says "CandySoul has an AMAZING ear!", and B.E.T.'s Vickie Johnson says that "CandySoul has the "IT" factor!" This TRIPLE-THREAT singer/songwriter/music producer is a professional and would be a valuable asset to any label and breath of fresh air to the music industry today.

  • Elan Trotman - Tropicality - Master Blaster (Jammin)

    •  SCULLERS CD RELEASE FEB 21st ELAN TROTMAN BIO Saxophonist Elan Trotman, has quickly become one of contemporary jazz’s most thrilling and emotive performers, and continues to stand out and push boundaries as a composer, performer, and recording artist. So much so that he's becoming the go-to sax-man for smooth jazz artists like Peter White, Paul Brown, Keiko Matsui, Brian Simpson, Rick Braun, and a guest spot on the Dave Koz 2012 Cruise to Europe. Trotman’s playing, though inspired by Grover Washington, Jr. and Kirk Whalum, among others, displays his own fresh ideas and distinctive tone. So much so that he's a 3-time winner of the New England Urban Music Award for Best Jazz Male, 2-time nominee for a Boston Music Award, and winner for Instrumentalist of the Year (Barbados) in 2011. Born and raised in Barbados, the native island of pop star Rihanna, and educated at the world-renowned Berklee College of Music in Boston, Trotman approaches jazz in his own way. Blending Caribbean rhythms from his roots with skillful horn textures, his playing is full of surprises. “I like to stretch out, take chances on my solos and on my records.” Inspiring and eminently listenable, Trotman’s music is never predictable.

MUSIC With 4 Top 25 Billboard singles already to his credit, Elan takes pride in always writing and producing his music. Love and Sax, Trotman’s 5th CD, debuted at #20 on Billboard Contemporary Jazz Albums in June of 2011. The single “Heaven In Your Eyes" that featured Brian Simpson climbed all the way to #11 on the Billboard Smooth Jazz Songs Chart. In the fall of 2011, Elan followed up with another single, a cover of Stevie Wonder's "As" with trumpeter Lin Rountree, which reached #16 on the Billboard Smooth Jazz Radio Chart. Prior to “Love and Sax” his 2009 release “This Time Around” gained significant airplay for the funky remake of Bill Withers hit “Lovely Day” by reaching #6 on the smoothjazz.com Top 50 Indie Chart, and the self-penned, feel good summer track “100 Degrees”.

For his 6th album "Tropicality", Elan proudly showcases his Caribbean heritage with his newest release on Woodward Avenue Records . ‘We “islanders” are happy people by nature, and that quality has always been evident by the way our music grooves. It’s a story of my journey from “Bridgetown to Beantown", and features rhythms and grooves from not just Barbados, but surrounding Caribbean Islands, Cape Verde, and Latin America. Guitarist and good friend Peter White co-produced the album, along with special guest appearances by Paul Brown, Terri Lyne Carrington and Nick Colionne. ON STAGE Trotman has recorded and performed with a number of world-class musicians, including Roberta Flack, Patti Austin, Will Downing, Phil Perry, Jamie Foxx, Kirk Whalum, Peter White, Gerald Albright, Dave Koz, Jeff Lorber, Paul Brown, Keiko Matsui, Raul Midon, Brian Simpson, Marlena Shaw, Earl Klugh, Average White Band, Brian McKnight, Johnny Gill, Nathan East, Najee, Nick Colionne, Gerald Veasley, Terri Lyne Carrington, Rick Braun, and Don Grusin to name a few. A huge sports fan, Trotman has performed the National Anthem on numerous occasions for such teams as the Boston Celtics, Boston Red Sox, Cincinnati Reds and Los Angeles Dodgers.

He put together the band that performed for NBA star Ray Allen’s wedding and performs annually for Theo Epstein’s charity event “Hot Stove Cool Music,” jamming with MLB Gold Glove pitcher Bronson Arroyo, and former ESPN analyst Peter Gammons. Says Trotman: “I hope that everyone, including people of all ages who might listen to straight-ahead jazz, smooth jazz, rock or gospel, enjoys the music and the performance. It’s for them.” FROM THE BEGINNING Trotman grew up in tropical island paradise of Barbados, (home of pop icon Rihanna) where he grooved to calypsos, reggae and local music. He started piano lessons at 7, picking up the saxophone five years later. Well-known local saxophonist Arturo Tappin became his mentor in high school. Tappin attended Berklee in the late 1980s and returned to the island with valuable insights into jazz, which he fused with calypso and reggae rhythms. “He helped expose me to other genres outside of our native music,” Trotman says.

While in high school, Trotman led his own band, worked with a couple of gospel groups and eventually formed his own combo, Inspiration. The combo found plenty of work at local shows and festivals. During this formative period, Trotman became inspired by Grover Washington Jr. and other contemporary jazz musicians who performed at the prestigious Barbados Jazz Festival. Trotman’s talents were recognized when the Barbados government awarded him a full scholarship to Berklee, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in music education. “The most beneficial thing about Berklee for me was the environment, since it is such a melting pot of talents,” he says. “We all learned from each other, taking solos, sitting in with people and interacting with each other. I learned to be a more well-rounded musician.” Because of his passion for education, Trotman – in addition to expanding his busy music career – Elan has served as a teacher in the Boston public school system for over 10 years.

  • Chris Godber - Mister Magic LIVE!

    • Chris Godber's Official Website

Chris Godber [God – burr]  is a saxophonist, producer and multi instrumentalist from Panama City, Florida.  He plays soprano, alto and tenor saxophones in addition to the piano, keyboards, and acoustic guitar.

Chris's latest album “My Offering” is his 4th album to date garnering praise and reviews the world over. Scott O'Brien from SmoothJazz.com says "If you’ve ever wondered what Kenny G would sound like if he kicked it up a notch, then you need to listen to this guy play”. Patrick Van de Wiele of SmoothJazz.eu says, “Sometimes he makes me think of Kenny G…you can easily situate him between those other more famous smooth jazz sax players!"  Unlike those “other more famous sax players”, however, Chris suffers from asthma. When starting middle school in Charleston, SC he aspired to start playing the saxophone, but his doctors told him he wouldn’t be able to because it may aggravate his symptoms. Chris didn’t take no for an answer and took to the sax anyway!  Though he struggled with it more so than other students at the time, he soon overcame the hurdle that was holding him back and used the saxophone as a form of self treatment for his asthma symptoms. Chris gives God all of the credit for allowing him to play and saying, “That’s why I play for Him. He’s the one that allows me to do so in the first place.”

In early 2011 Chris signed with LA Sax to endorse their saxophones and has nothing but great things to say about them. Chris has played with T. Graham Brown and performed for “Dancing With The Stars” on two occasions. What’s more he recently caught the attention of saxophone legends Kirk Whalum and Gerald Albright during the 2011 Seabreeze Jazz Festival in Pier Park, Panama City Beach, FL where they came by after one of Chris’s performances telling him how much they enjoyed his music and his inspirational message! Chris continues to travel and inspire audiences all over one note and one breath at a time!

  • Zdany Chisholm

    • Zdany Chisholm's Official Website

Many struggle to find their destined identity; strenuously taking different paths in hopes of finding what truly fits, but there are others that emerge fully formed with their own-identity established. Zdany Chisholm fits firmly in the latter category. His debut album, Genesis, a creative fusion of contemporary smooth jazz and R&B is attractive, sensual, and soulful to say the least. Originally a Florida boy, growing up in the city of Tampa, Zdany began his melodic life as a tot beating on pots and pans in his mother’s kitchen. After playing the drums for some time, he started playing the piano, taking after his maternal grandmother. Zdany found a natural aptitude to quickly learn how to play instruments and music by ear. He later picked up the trombone, finally settling on the saxophone. Zdany affirms, “There is just something about the saxophone; somehow it has the ability to connect the soul of the player to the listener.” A mainly self-taught multi-instrumentalist, Zdany is constantly developing his craft, style, and voice with the aids of a plethora of musical influences and of course his favorites. Zdany truly believes that everyone, from the “greats” to the “not-so greats” has a voice and wisdom to be bestowed. Now based out of Atlanta, GA, saxophonist, vocalist, producer and composer, Zdany Chisholm, has played his way from the kitchen floor, to stages and concert halls all around the world. Zdany has performed for mayors, dignitaries, and for numerous charitable events. For the past two years, Zdany has toured as the solo saxophonist for international recording artist, Cody Chesnutt, whose unique musical styling fuse elements of rock, funk, soul, blues, and hip hop. Zdany’s soulful sax and horn arrangements are currently featured on Chesnutt’s latest album, Landing on a Hundred. In 2011, Zdany performed at the legendary Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland sharing the stage with the likes of Larry Graham and Bootsy Collins. In addition to being featured on several CD projects, in 2012, Zdany released his self-produced debut album appropriately entitled, Genesis. The project highlights his diverse musical artistries as well as his proficiency in production. He reflects, “There was a lot of trial and error that went into the album, but all in all, I’m satisfied with the product. It’s like a perfect feel-good and melodious experience.” From the soulful groove of “Date Night,” the sensual sounds of “You Can Have It All,” the motivating inspiration of “Be Somebody,” and the lyrical ode to that special lady in “Queen of My Dreams,” there is indeed something for everyone to enjoy. Zdany’s currently staying busy working on his sophomore album and building his fan base by performing locally and on the road with several bands, wanting to always be in the right place, at the right time. He strives continually to stay meek and grounded even with all the many blessings and opportunities. Notable companies such as Sax Dakota, Bari Woodwind, Reunion Blues, Gator Cases, and Hercules Stands currently endorse Zdany. "Only what you do for Christ will last," says the humble man as he quotes his mother’s resounding words. This is only the beginning for Zdany, and he’s definitely up for challenge of carving out his place in this enormous realm of music.

  • Sam Hankins - Nothing Between Us

    • SAMUEL HANKINS Jr.

Samuel Hankins was born into a musical family. His maternal grandmother played the piano and was a tremendous gospel singer. His father played harmonica and vocals in various R & B bands. His brother plays the piano, majors in voice and teaches elementary school music. So it was inevitable that Sam's musical education would begin at an early age. Encouraged by his father, Samuel Hankins Sr., young "Hank" began with the guitar. In middle school he switched to the trumpet. Again, encouraged by his father, Sam began playing in churches, professional bands and orchestras.

Sam's love of music led him to Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, where he earned his Bachelor's Degree in Music Performance. He became active in college joining the distinguish men of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity. After college he joined the Air Force Jazz Band, The Pacesetters, stationed at Chanute Air Force Base in Rantoul, Illinois. He remained with the Pacesetters as a trumpeter until the Air Force Base closed in 1991. Sam then returned to school, earning both a second Bachelors Degree and a Masters Degree in Music Education from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
As a trumpet player, Sam has performed and recorded with many bands: such as Glenn Miller big band, Clark Terry, circus bands, funk bands, on cruise ships, combos, and commercial recording sessions. He has performed with pop artist groups such as The O'Jays, Aretha Franklin, Al Jarreau, The Temptations, The Impressions, and The Dells.

Armed with this impressive array of degrees, experience, and credentials, Sam accepted the position of Band Director at Edison Middle School in September 1995. Sam led a struggling band program with limited participation into one of the premier middle school instrumental music programs in the United States. During his first year as Band Director, Sam led two bands to place first in division ratings in the State Music Competitions.
Since that time the Edison Band Program has earned extensive recognition as one of the premier middle school band programs in Illinois and nationwide by winning numerous Division I ratings, State and National awards and recognitions. During this time, Sam was invited to be a Guest Conductor for Jazz and Concert bands as well as a guest soloist. He also founded, organized and directed The East Central Illinois Jazz Institute, a summer jazz camp of approximately 20 students from throughout east-central Illinois. In 1998, Sam received The White House Letter recognizing the Edison Middle School Band Program signed by Hillary Rodham Clinton. Sam’s achievements are just too numerous to all mention here.

Sam left Edison Middle School in 2006 to pursue an international teaching career in the country of Bermuda. He then returned to the US in 2008 to teach at McKay High School in Salem, Oregon, again leading their Jazz Band & Marching Band to place within the top three in state competitions. Sam returned to Chicago in the fall of 2010 and was hired as Band Director at Christ Our Savior Catholic School in a temporary position. When this band program was terminated due to a lack of funding, Sam concentrated on pursuing his other passion in music, arranging and composing. This led to the release of 2 CD’s; Dream Catcher in July 2011 and his smooth jazz CD, “Nothing Between Us” in May 2012. Both CD’s have received lots of radio play around the world and the in the US.
Sam has recently accepted a position as Band Director at Crete-Monee Middle School in Chicago and is looking forward to working with band students again.

  • Andreas Svarc - Chill Out (Official Music Video)

    • Andreas Svarc's iTunes Website

      No-one is born a master.

That's what Andreas was thinking at age 17 when he decided to earn his living with music. He knew that many years of work and hardship would be ahead of him until he would become a world class pianist. The native Czech gained his first experiences in the Prague conservatoire, where he worked together with well-known musicians. It was a big leap towards his goals when he moved to Switzerland in 1995 to study at the Swiss Jazz School. But jazz alone wasn't good enough for him - classical music also grabbed his attention since his early days, so he also finished his training diploma for classical piano literature as a student of Patrizio Mazzola, Albert Sielder and Dory Huber. Until now he is an avid bar pianist, who has a lot of fun playing live while inspiring the people with his music. Some of his own compositions, in part some short jingles, were released on his website. Each of them tells a little story, and he used some of them as a base for his upcoming album which is in the works right now as you read this. Musically, it will be a varied and atmospheric experience that could be described as Smooth jazz, but actually only the charismatic piano play serves as the central theme and link between the songs on the album. To shorten the waiting time for the album, Andreas decided to release the single "Nesomajaka" to give a little teaser for the rightfully curious listeners. The single was released on March 7th, 2012 in a limited 7" vinyl edition. The debut album will be released in 2013.

      BIO

Kathy Yolanda Rice was born and raised in the cosmopolitan city of Huntsville, Alabama, where her passion for music and art was recognized at an early age. Kathy writes her own lyrics and musical compositions. Most of her original tunes are based on real life experiences and emotions, from childhood throughout her adult years.

Kathy began piano lessons at age 6, but knew that she always wanted to focus on singing. She took formal voice training at age 12 and continued throughout college, graduating from Alabama A & M University with a major in Music. Kathy embarked on a recording project with Hit Record Producer, Kelvin Wooten, formerly of Toni! Tony! Tone! Kelvin and Kathy created the magic that made her music so classy and unique. Wooten has produced hit songs for Anthony Hamilton, Jill Scott, Erykah Badu and Kelly Price, to name a few.

Kathy is a gifted vocalist with a style of her own while she captures the hearts of many with her precious voice and original compositions.
Kathy's latest 2013 release is a collaborative smooth jazz project with songwriter Gary Swann. The tune, Love is Like a Sunny Day, features Kelley O'Neal on Saxophone.
Rice joined several other women musicians on the Bobby Pin Diaries movie soundtrack, which features her up-tempo tune, I've Gotta Find a Love for the February 2013 release.

August 2012 marked the release of a beautiful gospel project...the recording of the Walter Hawkins remake of Jesus Christ is the Way, by Nuove Mystique. Rice is the lyric soprano in the group. The jazzy rendition was released on Audio State 55 and is distributed by the Warner Music Group.

Through her networking with other women musicians, Rice was a featured artist on the Women in Jazz South Florida Volume III compilation CD, released in December 2012. Her classic jazz piece, Cloak and Dagger Affair, heads the lineup of this eclectic mix of jazzy tunes. In 2011, Rice performed her mellow vocals on Marc Lacy's Narcoleptic CD on the track entitled, “Exodus.” In December 2010, Rice collaborated on a Soulful House project entitled, "Feeling the Heat" with world renown Dance/House music record producers Fabio Tosti and Francesco Tarantini on Music Plan Records out of Bari, Italy.

Kathy Yolanda Rice tells real-life stories of love, faith and hope in musical compositions. Her debut CD, "After All These Years" released in 2004, is seasoned with a flavor of jazz and consists of 10 timeless contemporary tunes.

  • Keyan Williams - The Art Of Living

    • KEYAN WILLIAMS BIO

Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, Keyan Williams now makes his home in Meriden, CT after many years in Phoenix, AZ. The multi-talented musician started playing the sax at age 8 and by the age of 16 he was playing jazz sax and classical flute. When saxophonist Keyan Williams released his debut album The Art of Living in 2006, the smooth jazz format was already contracting, leaving steep challenges for new independent artists to find avenues to get their music heard. One of his radio station contacts suggested some unique grass roots approaches to promotion, including placing the tracks up on GarageBand in the contemporary jazz category. Williams’ tunes created an immediate sensation, averaging a rating of 4.5/5 stars; the most popular of these songs, “Thought I Told You About That” stayed on the chart for over four months, leading to terrestrial airplay on stations in Phoenix (where Keyan lived from 2000 to 2008 and recorded The Art of Living with musicians Jeremiah Norah and Raymond Love) and Reno. Williams also submitted his CD to The Weather Channel, which spun four tracks for over a year and a half, exposing his music to millions of people. Another sweet success from the album was the techno-house/jazz influenced tune “Swift Kick”, which was a huge hit on the college radio circuit. Williams was also one of only four artists chosen (out of 400 entrants) for a digital distribution deal with Iris Distribution via Sonicbids—and the only jazz artist.

The Brooklyn born and raised, NYC based Williams built such an enthusiastic fan base that his few years away from recording due to personal issues and other business endeavors led many of his supporters to reach out asking when he would be back in action, and supporting him every step of the way as he did so. While still grounded in the style of his personal musical hero Grover Washington, Jr., Williams takes some outside the box risks on his second full-length project It’s All About You. Explaining the title of the album, he says, “While my fans were asking me about the next CD, they would tell me what they loved about the first one. So I decided to create a CD based on what they said they loved. It’s about my fans, those people who kept me uplifted during this challenging time in my life. I’m always writing songs that reflect everything I’m going through, and my goal was for them to identify with my music. I started out with 25 songs and chose the ones that stuck with me and which I felt they would enjoy best.”

Williams is the founder of Told U So Productions, a company for which he works on developing artists while he continues writing and producing. In addition to his own projects, he is currently collaborating with other artists, looking into producing two singers and working on a project combining poetry and jazz with four poets. He is also a major endorser, with nine total endorsements for mouthpieces, reeds, mics and sax accessories; he is an endorsee of P. Mauriat Saxophones. He has performed for several of these companies at the NAMM convention over the past few years.

      MUSIC

Truly a diverse and dynamic work centered around solid grooves, infectious melodies and emotional and inventive improvisations, It’s All About You launches with the laid back, old school cool funk (with hand clap percussion and few ambient and exotic twists) of “Blazin’” before bubbling over on the strutting, buoyantly romantic (and perfectly titled) “Bounce With It.” Williams then invites his listeners to the “Funky House (where a snappy electric guitar leads into an easy flowing, gently percussive melody) for some sizzling “Indigenous Heat” (a dreamy and sensual bit of late night smooth featuring Williams on soprano). The title track opens with a trippy synth atmosphere, and then evolves into a graceful soprano ballad that opens the saxman’s heart to his fans via a little romance and a touch of horn texturing. The pocket groove ballad “Midnight Blue” blends sensual wistful light funk with a hypnotic soprano sax-synth swirl. One of Williams’ favorites is the sensuous, candlelit “My Lady”, a sweet balmy love affair with lush synth string textures. Williams takes us on a whimsical stroll through his hometown on the slow jam ballad “Sax 5th Avenue”, then gets tribal and shuffling with some creative percussion, which drives the edgy and emotional melody of “Steppin’ Out With Key”. He closes with a colorful gospel blues number, “Why Not,” which features a dynamic organ textures swirled with percussive piano chords—truly a dramatic ending for a powerful set of music.

      ON STAGE

As a student at Southern University in Baton Rouge, he played in the marching band, participating in halftime competitions against the bands at schools like Grambling. He launched his career back in New York playing in blues bands. Influenced by Grover Washington, Jr. as well as other greats like Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Wes Montgomery and Stanley Clarke, Williams has been gracing the stage since his very early years, playing at various venues like Carnegie Hall and Avery Fisher Hall—and the trendy club Jazzmania—in various band situations during his high school and college days. He has had the honor of sharing the stage with Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea and Junior Cook—experiences that have helped make him the performer he is today.

      REVIEW

“As an independent recording artist, Keyan Williams embraces the opportunity to make music on his own terms rather than at the dictation of the commercial marketplace. Following his own muse--and inspired by the thousands of fans he gained from his breakthrough CD The Art Of Living--the New York based saxman on It’s All About You creates a thoughtful, melodic, coolly funky set of tunes that do it all – warm the heart, get the groove on, transcend the usual genre boundaries, and take contemporary jazz in an exciting new direction. To draw from some of his titles, there’s “Blaze” and bounce, blue and heat, and yes, a little bit of the blues and gospel that has also been part of his varied musical life experience. Living up to its title, it’s a true gift for longtime fans and others new to what Williams has to offer”. – Jonathan Widran

New York saxophonist Keyan Williams says he’s influenced by Grover Washington Jr. and you’ll agree that Williams learned much from the late legend after hearing It’s All About You, his second CD and follow-up to The Art of Living. It’s a top-notch CD with plenty of entry points—smooth, urban, sexy, upbeat, dance hall.
The bouncy “Blazin’” and “Midnight Blue” are both supremely in the pocket with juicy, dancing backbeats underlying Williams’ relaxed sax playing. With “Bounce With It”, however, Williams displays his sax range as he solos over some very fat and sexy rhythms. On “Indigenous Heat,” Williams also proves his prowess on the horn through a mid-tempo tune with a definite jazz flair and an extra-funky organ solo.
Williams is all about smooth jazz, and a smooth jazzer has to have ballads. One of the best around is “Sax 5th Avenue”, which is the definition of “sultry”. His soprano also sounds sweet on “It’s All About You” and “My Lady”, the latter with soulful background vocals and late-night-style piano playing completing the sexy groove. – Brian Soergel

Discerning urban jazz fans searching for something new to get jazzed and groove about don’t need to have A Vicarious Experience to make it happen—they just need to get hip to the melodic and cool old school soul meets contemporary funk of veteran saxophonist Reggie Codrington. While the Fayetteville, North Carolina native is new on many people’s radars, he’s actually been performing and recording since the early 90s and has eight previous CDs, several under the name Reggie C; the most recent of these are Sunny Days (2008), Vision of Dreams (2010), Christmas With Pops (2009) and Journey Back Home (2005), which was produced by Phil Davis, who has worked with Stanley Clarke, George Duke and Al Jarreau, among many others.

His latest project, which is produced by and features the tenacious bass playing of Brian Morgan (whose many credits include George Benson), A Vicarious Experience finds Codrington—whose primary voice is the curved soprano sax--in a romantic, optimistic mood, using the changing vibes of the songs (and the listener’s imagination) to chronicle the ups, downs, excitement and challenges of a romantic relationship from track to track. While many artists cite their parents as prime influences on their careers, Codrington takes that one step further, inviting his father Ray—who helped Codrington develop his skills and learn improvisation—to play trumpet throughout the recording.

“When I make a record, I always want to have a warm sound with harmonies,” he says, “and in this case that means having dad play a lot of horn parts and percussion. When we were making the album, I found myself in a 70s and 80s type groove, inspired by everyone from De La Soul funk rhythms to Sade and Parliament. I grew up listening to old school R&B/funk so that’s a pretty natural influence for me. The process began with Brian sending me some great tracks and me putting melodies to them, then arranging harmonies and atmospheres around my lead sax. The romantic story thread emerged from the emotions I was experiencing at the time with the lady I was dating. I thought it might be fun to invite people into my musical heart this way.”

Like a lot of veteran artists who have taken many recordings to break through, Codrington has survived his share of disappointments in the music industry, even as he’s made a living performing for many years. That commitment to overcoming obstacles stems from the difficulties in his childhood dealing with Ataxic Cerebral Palsy (ACP), a chronic condition that affects muscle coordination and depth perception. Receiving a curved soprano sax on his 18th birthday led to a major transformation, offering a comfortable way to play that he had not previously experienced. “Something magical happened, and I knew I had found my niche,” he says. “I fell in love.”

      ON STAGE

Codrington has been a staple in his hometown of Fayetteville for many years, enjoying regular gigs at many of the city’s high-end clubs and restaurants (including a seven year stint at The Hilltop House and four years at The Trio Café) and the Highland Country Club. In 2010, he performed in the city at an event called Stone Soul Picnic, opening for renowned urban sax great Kim Waters. Throughout his career, he has also opened for numerous legends, including Ramsey Lewis once in Charlotte, and he has played with keyboardist Kevin Tony at the Key Club in Los Angeles. Last year, he opened for Frankie Beverly and Maze and Charlie Wilson from The Gap Band. Codrington also played at the star studded Black Caucus in Washington, DC.

      MUSIC

Codrington begins the romantic journey of A Vicarious Experience by recognizing the women he just met as a “Familiar Stranger”, an in the pocket funk driven gem featuring a stylish, whimsical sax melody. He conveys the cool excitement of “Getting To Know You” with a wistful melody (featuring horn doubling with his dad) and soulful, mid-tempo groove. The rhythm picks up with the help of a jangling rhythm guitar, bouncy bass and edgy synth percussion “En Route” to the couple’s first date, and they agree (via a moody and seductive, easy swaying flow) to enter a relationship that is “Consensual.” Codrington affirms the growing relationship with the slow-jamming easy funk rhythms and caressing atmospheres of “United We Stand”. A few cracks in the foundation and some growing pains inform the trippy synth percussion intro to “Divided Attention”, whose soaring soprano melody acts as a siren for potential hazards that can happen when life outside the relationship intervenes. They work things out by focusing with a “One Track Mind”, featuring Codrington’s sax and other horn textures rolling over edgy modern grooves. Affirming that it’s all systems go, “Back On Track” is a buoyant and infectious slice of dreamy danceable classic soul. Things end on such a high note (with a party like vibe and old school keyboard sounds surrounding the sax on “Happily Ever After”) that Codrington projects his love into eternity with a clapping groove and a wondrously optimistic spiritual declaration: “I’ll See You There.”

      FROM THE BEGINNING

Reggie Codrington is the son of the nationally known musician and bandleader Ray Codrington, who played with numerous soul legends, including Little Richard, Gladys Knight and the late Jackie Wilson. The saxman fondly remembers his father’s band practicing in the family’s den, and his childhood was marked by dreams of making music. By age five, Codrington learned how to read music and the fundamentals of musicianship. But his ACP—which required nine intense surgeries before he was 13—delayed his ability to play the sax for many years. Those afflicted with the condition often have poor coordination and walk unsteadily with a wide based gait. The surgeries involved muscles being alternately cut and transferred from his elbow, wrist and right tricep to improve his finger dexterity. Other muscles were cut from his leg to offer more mobility and make it easier to walk.

Codrington discovered that music could transcend him to a place of tranquility and offer a way to escape from the stress of life with a disability. Immersing himself in his music, Reggie was encouraged to join his school band where he found acceptance from his peers. And the ridicule he once encountered from his schoolmates was replaced with respect for his talent as a musician. Receiving the curved soprano allowed him to use a neck strap for a more comfortable fit for his arm and allowed for more finger dexterity and coordination. Armed with his new instrument, Reggie continued his study of music at Howard University where he started to develop his own personal style and truly grow as a musician. Receiving accolades from professors and friends also lit a fire in his soul to keep perfecting his special gift.

His ultimate goal is to go on tour and share his music and his triumphant story of overcoming the physical challenges of being disabled. His vision is to tour the world talking to young people and sharing how he overcame a debilitating disability, ridicule in his youth, and unsavory independent labels as he traveled on his road to success in the contemporary jazz world.

      REVIEWS

“One listen to the high energy, beautifully arranged, slickly produced and super melodic and rhythmic A Vicarious Experience is all it takes to hear that Codrington’s a major player with a great deal to add to the urban jazz genre. His joyous funky spirit infuses every note and invites the listener into a musical realm where romance is perfectly balanced by dance and groovability. Hearing A Vicarious Experience will make everyone want to check out Codrington’s back catalog and see what we’ve all been missing. No doubt it’s a lot, and with any luck, that will change with the release of this recording, one of the best indie collections of the year.” – Jonathan Widran, All Music

“Smooth jazz doesn’t get much more intoxicating than that offered by Reggie Codrington, a North Carolina native whose sax lines have drawn comparisons to Grover Washington Jr. You could add Kim Waters, too, and like Waters, Codrington has mastered a skill many other fail to: making accessible instrumental music that’s also musically interesting. Even on his up-tempo numbers, like “Divided Attention” and “Getting to Know You”, Codrington goes forth with laid-back sax lines, peppy bursts alternating with elongated notes that can change tempo and direction all in one breath. He’s under control, in other words, and that assuredness makes for a great listening experience on “Vicarious Experience”, his ninth CD. What makes Codrington’s skills so special is that he was born with a palsy condition that affects his muscle coordination. Music eventually became a heaven-sent outlet for Reggie who had nine surgeries by age 13. He surely has an inspirational story and his music is” - Brian Soergel, Brian Soergel

  • Sam Hankins - Are You Serious

    • Hello, my artist name is Larry Flet,

This is from the age of 35 I started really trying to compose music as an orphan disease with debilitating and is calling: Fibromyalgia since 1998, the music was for me my buoy rescue. This disease, for which there is no real treatment, is not recognized in France. I fight against chronic pain, fatigue and especially against the prejudices that we are rotting life. We are often excluded because of misunderstanding, intolerance and stupidity of people. I hope, through my music, let me know and recognize as a musician and composer but also to promote and recognize this disease. I hope to meet with producers, writers, singers or singers but also other musicians to work on projects. You like my work? You would like to collaborate with me? Lonnie has performed in all types of venues from casino show rooms to arenas and coliseums including, MGM Grand and Hilton casinos in Las Vegas, Trump Taj Mahal, Atlantic City, Nimes Coliseum, Nimes, France, Rosemont Theater, Chicago, Lincoln Center, New York, Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts, Cerritos, CA. They have performed for all types of audiences including most recently a USO tour to Kuwait and Iraq for our troops.

Lonnie has been entertaining since he was in elementary school, learning tap licks, and intricate rhythms from his father, Kansas City hoofer and all around entertainer Smilin’ Jimmy McFadden. His Dad, danced with the likes of “The Count Basie Orchestra,” “Blanche Calloway’s Harlem Review,” “Jay McShann,” and many more of the top name entertainers and orchestra’s of the 30’s and 40’s. Along with leading a top notch tap dancing act of his own, “The 3 Chocolate Drops” who traveled around the eastern and central United States. Working in the same circuit as “The Berry Brothers,” “The Rhythm Kings” and another group by the name of “The Will Mastin Trio.”

McFadden began teaching his sons (The McFadden Brothers) tap dancing at the ages of 3 and 4. In addition, he made sure both Lonnie and Ronald took piano lessons at the Conservatory of music to learn music as he taught them lots of comedy bits, tap routines and songs to sing.

At ages 6 and 7 Lonnie and Ronald gave their first recital, an hour long show that consisted of the two McFadden Brothers singing, tap dancing, doing comedy bits and playing piano and organ.
After The McFadden Brothers entered junior high school, they completely quit tap dancing and taking piano lessons, largely due to peer pressure as Lonnie recalls, “They weren’t too fond of tap dancers at the school we went to.” So they decided to concentrate more on playing the trumpet (Lonnie) and the alto saxophone (Ronald). Instruments that were more accepted by their peers.

As a teenager, Lonnie traveled with one of the regional R&B and Top 40 bands playing trumpet and singing before starting his own band, “Lonnie and The Band” that included Ronald on the alto sax. It was during this time that Lonnie became a song writer and arranger. After Lonnie and The Band had run it’s course, The McFadden Brothers were born.

By the 1980s the McFadden Brothers paralleled their father’s career by performing with “The Count Basie Orchestra”. They played major jazz festivals in Europe and Japan, appearing on the same bill with such jazz greats as Miles Davis and Wynton Marsalis.

Lonnie and his brother have made many local and national television appearances including “Incredible Sunday’s” the result of a recommendation from Ben Vareen. The McFadden Brothers have also performed with some of the biggest names in show business, like Sammy Davis Jr., Tony Orlando and were the featured act with Wayne Newton for over 2 and a half years. • Sarai Usry - Smooth Jazz Vocalist & Michael E. Frith Intrumentalist

      SARAI USRY
A Latina and Chicago native, Sarai Usry was born into a Puerto Rican musically talented family where her passion for music and in particular singing was sparked at a very early age. Raised in Chicago, Illinois, her father, a well versed musician himself, introduced her to all genres of music as she grew up. The sounds of Myles Davis, Pat Matheney, Al Green, Aretha Franklin, Ella
Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra and many more were commonplace in her household and really broadened her musical horizons. Of course, growing up in Chicago, she was exposed to all the great music that it offered with Jazz, Blues, Classical, Salsa, Pop, Motown and Gospel music everywhere.

From a very young age, Sarai dreamed of becoming a famous singer and practiced her skill for hours every day singing any material she could lay her hands on. Never missing an episode of American Bandstand nor the Soul Train brought even more material to her ears. Artists like Sade, Michael Jackson, Madonna,The Gap Band, Cool n the Gang, Donna Summer, Chicago, and others simply served to reinforce her lifelong dream to become a world renowned singer. Sarai is gifted with a smooth and sultry voice with powerful mezzo soprano tones. Sarai has had opportunities to show case her talent on US television, church organizations, and school choral programs, weddings, numerous festivals in Chicago as well as Jazz bars in the wider Chicago area.

She has had the opportunity to sing on TV, Church chorus, School Chorus programs, wedding,
events, festivals, Jazz Bar pubs or where ever she has taken every opportunity
      to show case her talent.
She has recently been featured by the famous Ruben Valentino Ciccone, Madonna’s Element.
Currently Sarai is featured on The Mesa Project with Sheffield, UK music producer Michael
Frith. They are releasing an EP called Come Closer in April 2013.

      Michael E.
      Michael E. Biography
Introduced to music at the age of eight, Sheffield native, Michael E struggled with the classical music he was taught to play on the piano. Although he enjoyed the harmonious sounds of certain chords and the joy of playing thunder and lightning sounds with the very low and high notes then listening to the sounds fade away, the classical music did not really resonate with him. It was in the early 70’s with the Motown/Santana era that music began to speak to him in a more profound way. He joined various cover bands and toured the European/American Navy and Air force bases in Germany, Italy, Spain and Sicily playing keyboards and percussion. A short stint with U.S. vocal group Johnny Johnson and the Bandwagon (Breaking Down the Walls of Heartache) however killed the fun of touring.

Michael E continued his love of music at home in Sheffield as a solo pianist picking up various restaurant/hotel jobs while also trying to support his family. He started to compose his own music for solo piano at a time when the age of software recording had not yet arrived. When it did, he realised he could complete a full arrangement of his own music playing all the parts.
It was a complete revelation and Michael E has never looked back. A big influence came in the early 90's in the shape of the Cafe Del Mar series as instrumental music for its own sake began to make inroads into the world’s musical consciousness, where music did not have to be a "song" but could stand alone as an instrumental piece. But the difference was it was music not wholly played on traditional instruments but introduced electronica into the mix, with all sorts of wonderful sounds and delays that conjured up musical landscapes and exotic worlds of sound. Michael E was well and truly hooked and it was almost like a new beginning for music
Those early sessions of thunder and lightning finally made sense. He was searching for soundscapes that painted pictures and the selections he was hearing on digital music compilations had this quality in abundance. It wasn't until 2006 that he was finally in a position to dedicate his life to the pursuit of his musical dream. When the chance came along he grasped it wholeheartedly.

His first release in the chilled/lounge genre was in 2006 and ever since has simply made up for lost time.
Michael E has now released 13 albums and appeared on over 300 compilations.
Michael E is soon to release a 5 track EP called “Come Close” a collaboration with Chicago based vocalist ‘Sarai Usry’.
Michael E also hosts a two hour weekly radio show on Sunday mornings on soulradiouk.com from 10am to 12pm GMT.

Recording and performing my music has been my lifelong dream. I hope that everyone enjoys my songs and finds a connection to each and every one of them. My first introduction to music came at the age of three. I remember sneaking into my grandfather’s closet to strum his old acoustic guitar. Later, at the age of six, my family relocated from North Africa to Rome where I was able to enjoy the romantic sounds produced by my father’s accordion. Next, at the age of eight I found myself, along with my family, relocating to the good old USA. Finally, at the age of thirteen, I was introduced to the great sounds of, a well known band known as, the “Beatles”. After that, life as I knew it would never be the same. I guess, that’s how it all started

  • Dyna Davis - At Last

    • Dayna Davis Official Website

Equally gifted as a jazz, pop and R&B singer, Dayna cites her chief influences as Whitney Houston, Natalie Cole and Jill Scott; “combine those three and you get me”, she says. Gospel has also been a large part of her musical life, and she performed extensively and recorded one album with the group Mark Holley and 1-A-Chord, which she was a part of from 2005-2007. The emerging vocalist officially launched her solo career in the fall of 2011 with the release of her first single, a powerhouse version of the Etta James classic “At Last,” and launching her own label, DRD International Records and publishing company, DRD International Publishing. Davis has just begun work on her full-length debut album, on which she promises a mix of originals and a couple of cover tunes.
Beyond establishing herself as an artist, one of Dayna’s goals is to write songs in various genres for other artists. “The reason I am excited about writing for other artists,” she says “because I’m able to express other genres of music that don’t necessarily fit my style, voice or image, which I think is classic, clean, soulful and fresh. So far, many of my fans are older because I have a large standard and classic pop repertoire. However, I have expanded my sound, which includes neo-soul and R&B, thus my audience demographics have become much more diverse. It’s nice to perform to an audience of all ages and nationalities and have them appreciate what I do and who I am. The songs I want to do for my debut will stay classy but also be contemporary and fresh.
I see myself as a pop/R&B singer who can do a little jazz. While I’m still in the early stages of making this album, the direction I’m going in will have pop and soul, balanced with funky grooves and classic sounds. I’m excited to keep performing and see where this amazing journey will take me.”

    • Ron Hutchen's Reverbnation.com Website

After growing up in Asheboro, N.C., I moved to Nashville in 1980 to pursue music. For  several years I worked with recording artist “The Girls Next Door” on MTM Records, Rex Allen Jr. of the Statler Brothers Show, and the great Slim Whitman. I began to play on recording sessions, writing songs, and performing with numerous bands around Nashville.
In 1990, I wrote a song that was recorded by the rock band “Blue Tears” on MCA Records.
In 2000, I co-wrote and produced a contemporary jazz project “The Strange-Hutchens Ensemble”.
2003, the song “Strong”, written with Gregg Fulkerson, was released on “Attraction 65” with Atenzia Records.
2008, recorded “A Different State Of Mind” with Terry Vuncannon.
2010 , released first solo project “Something In Blue”. The song “Steppin’ In Blue”, was featured on  Café Jazz Radio by Ted Hasiuk and several other stations.

      Reviews:

We felt the instrumental leads were tuneful, interesting and well-articulated. There's no overplaying here, and nothing seems to be lacking either. Spot on. Above almost everything else, melody is an essential musical quality. Yours jumped out at us. Good melodies don't come easy, you should be proud. A good song structure generally has both repetition and surprise, and we thought you nailed it. Having a good arrangement, with the right instrumentation, helps give listeners a better sense of what's happening melodically and harmonically. Your arrangements were just right. Nice job.     Hello Music – 2010
Here is a case of a somewhat unheralded artist, Ron Hutchens, with more than a bit of talent. Quite a bit more than a bit, in fact. This project, Something In Blue, is a clear statement of what we sometimes miss when looking away from those who are not necessarily household names in the business.  This artist, primarily a pianist/keyboardist who plays all of the instruments on this self-produced recording,  may well be one of the better kept secrets in the world of smooth jazz.
You may have to get past track one, which is not nearly as impressive as the rest of the album, in my opinion, but track two, “Bluelicious,” is where the head of steam really begins to pick up. With a style at times resembling that of Rick Kelly (Soul Ballet) and at other times Hardcastle/Jazzmasters, Hutchens has a firm finger on the pulse of not only the great mechanics of his craft but on its very soul.  Just check out tracks like the very catchy “Walkin’ Down Blue” and the sweet and mellow “Baby Blue.” Two entirely different feeling tracks, each with its own soul but each with the same central driver, an artist with a vision of how really good music should sound in any environment.
Hutchens invigorated my faith in the work ethic and imagination of the truly serious indie artist. Just listen. The proof is there.      Copyright © 2009 - 2010 The Smooth Jazz Ride, LLC.
Most people have a favorite color and when it comes to Ron Hutchens I get the distinct impression that Ron’s favorite is blue. His latest CD is called “Something in Blue”, and fittingly each and every selection has blue as part of its title. It was one of these cuts that first pulled me to the sound of this Nashville based keyboardist. For all genuine lovers of music, I’m sure you can relate to hearing a track that completely draws you in the instant that you first hear it; so it was with Ron and “Steppin’ in Blue”! Here’s an outstanding piece and one that we were pleased to present as a feature selection on our Best of 2010 Review. So when it comes to the music of Ron Hutchens, I must admit, “Steppin’ in Blue” has become my favorite color too!      Ted Hasiuk – Café Jazz Radio
Ron Hutchens is a favorite here at www.usnewjazz.com.
His style evokes a sensual, modern feeling that gives fans of contemporary jazz an exciting new twist with the keyboards. He is a master at this and a new talent not to be missed!"

  • Cameron Ross - New Perspective

    • Cameron Ross' Official Website

Cameron, a native of Osceola, AR, comes from a heritage deeply rooted in God and music.  As a child, he always knew that he had a place in music, but didn't know exactly where.  That all changed when he entered the 6th grade.  Determined to play the drums, he signed up for middle school band. However, his parents told him that he had to play saxophone.  "I didn't want to play it because it had too many buttons."  After being tired of always getting last chair in band class, he decided to take his sax home and actually practice it.  This resulted in him getting first chair and he has been soaring since.

Cameron began playing in church at the age of 14 along with his brother Byron, who had just began playing the trumpet.  They, along with some other musicians at their church, formed and instrumental group called "The Promiseland Band".  They performed at their local church and other functions throughout town.  As the members started to get older, interest in the group started to decline.  This is when Cameron decided to start his solo career.  By the age of 16, Cameron was traveling all across the state to play at different functions.  His efforts were rewarded by receiving a full tuition scholarship to Arkansas State University where he earned a Bachelors of Music Education degree.  He has since played with some of the top names in gospel and jazz and his résumé is continuously building.

Cameron currently resides in Marion, AR with his wife Vicki.  They have two children, Joshua and Ariel.  He also is a middle school band teacher with Memphis City Schools and serves at World Overcomers Outreach Ministries Church.

  • Tamika Dunning - All I Am

    • Tamika Dunning's Official Website

From the moment I came into the world I loved music. My mother said I'd hum melodies before I could talk, and as soon as I could walk I was humming and dancing. I hoarded any music or record I could find. If someone was tired of their old vinyl or cassette music I'd take them and add them to my collection. Before long I'd collected hundreds of albums. My room was a music library. I had every type of music genre imaginable. I learned to love all music and still do to this day. I learned to sing gospel, reggae, rock, blues, soul, country, classical—you name it. If it was music I was listening. I never missed an episode of Soul Train or American Bandstand. I loved Don Cornelius and Dick Clark. I lived for their interviews. And when BET and Donny Simpson and MTV came on the scene I was an addict. All the while these diverse music experiences were influencing my own development and style. Which most say is hard to pigeonhole into one specific genre.

I took my clarinet and cassette player with me everywhere I went. And when I wasn't listening to music I was composing it and singing it. When I was 10 years old I won First Chair in All City Band. I played my clarinet and everyone loved it. My mother hugged me and asked how in the world did you do that and I looked at her and without emotion said God. She laughs and tells that story every Thanksgiving.

I never quite believed I was good enough to pursue music as a career and in my family focusing on a college education was what was expected of me. So I focused on my education and on my business career all the while privately obsessing on music. My husband and best friend who is also an artist and loves music, looks me in my eyes one evening during a candle lit dinner and says, “Follow your heart and dreams. Success is measured by happiness. It doesn't matter who may or may not like your art as long as you do.” He said, “You are very talented and your voice is the most beautiful I've ever heard.” I'm sure he's quite biased. But that day changed my life's journey. And I haven't looked back. My music is an expression of me and who I am. I hope you enjoy it.

      Follow your heart and dreams.

      Much love,
      Tamika
